QuelWord

How to play

Word of the day

Guess the word from the clue. Tap letters: correct ones reveal, wrong ones cost a life. 5 lives, one game a day.

Grid

Guess the word in 6 tries. After each guess: green = right spot, yellow = in the word but wrong spot, grey = not in the word.

Fill the blank

A sentence with one word missing. Guess it letter by letter, like Word of the day — but the context guides you instead of the definition.

False friends

A word that looks like one in the other language but means something else. Pick the right translation from four: you get two tries, and the trap is always on the board.

Idioms

An expression from your language, and four ways to say it in the other. Only one is real; another is the word-for-word translation, the classic trap. Two tries.

Both languages

When a game ends we show you the same word in the other language, with its definition. Play in English, learn French — or the other way around.

Score

Win = 1000 points, plus a bonus for every life (or try) you have left, plus a speed bonus up to 300 (−1 per second). A flawless game is worth 2500 in every game. Loss = 0.

Leaderboard

One ranking per mode and per language — today's and all-time. Sign in (or create an account) to appear on it.

For teachers

Daily word games, in two languages.

Five minutes at the start of class, everyone on the same word. QuelWord is free, needs no account, and shows no ads.

In class

  1. Put the game on the board with projection mode: big type, nothing else on screen.
  2. The class calls out letters, you click. At the end, the word appears in the other language with its definition and an example.
  3. False friends and idioms make a great warm-up: four answers, one right, and the trap is always there.

Start projection mode

Opens the game full size, without header or footer. Press Escape to leave.

Tip: play signed out, so you don't use up your own ranked game of the day.
